Upcoming events at the Warren Public Library in Warren, Vermont.

Warren Public Library is Busy in April-2010!

The WPL has a diverse list of events planned for April-2010.  Please mark your calendars with the following:

– A POETRY SLAM  on Monday, April 12 at the WPL from 6:30-8PM.  Bring two original poems, 3-minutes or less in length, for recitation, performance, and competition.  Geof Hewitt will host the fun and entertaining evening.  We are looking for Slam participants and audience members.  Light refreshments will be served;

“WHEN CULTURES MEET”- BOOK DISCUSSION on Thursday, April 15 at the WPL-9:30AM.  VHC Scholar, Rachael Cohen, will lead the discussion about “Changes in the Land” by WM. Cronon;

ADULT ONLINE CATALOG TRAINING on Tuesday, April 20 at the WPL from 11AM-Noon.  Please call the WPL (496-3913) to register as participants will need login and password info before class; and

ARMCHAIR TRAVELOGUE on Tuesday, April 27 at Evergreen Place (Waitsfield) at Noon.  This travel series about Greece  includes reading lists, speakers and international cuisine.  Please call Lorraine (496-2543), at least 24 hours ahead, for lunch reservations.

“A Mountain Love Affair: The Story of Mad River Glen”

Mary Kerr, author of the book “A Mountain Love Affair: The Story of Mad River Glen”, will be speaking at the Warren Public Library on Sunday, March 7th at 2PM.  Besides spotlighting some Valley personalities, Kerr’s book tells the story of many dedicated people who maintained one man’s vision to offer mountain skiing experiences more for recreation than profit.  She will also talk about the various aspects of her life as a Mad River Valley resident.  This presentation is free and open to the public of all ages, but we do suggest seat reservations.  Please call the Warren Library (496-3913) or Gail Hietzker (583-1935) for seat reservations and/or additional information.  A reception will start at 1:30PM and Kerr will speak from 2-3PM.

The Warren Public Library Trustees and staff  invite  library patrons and MRV friends to participate in our February – 2010, LOVE YOUR WARREN PUBLIC LIBRARY MONTH.   Hand in your fill-in-the-blank Valentine, to be displayed on Town Meeting Day, with “I love the Warren Library because” sentiments.  You may also want to contribute to our WPL Wish List – consisting of miscellaneous library needs – plus books, videos and audio books we would like to add to our current collection.

Meet Author, Laurel Neme, of the book “Animal Investigations”

Laurel Neme, author of the book “Animal Investigations”, will speak at the Warren Public Library on Sunday, Feb.7, at 2PM.  This lecture, geared for adults and youth over 10 years of age, gives a fascinating look at animal product smuggling and ways scientists work to stop it.  The author discusses some undercover wildlife trafficking cases and how they were solved. 

Neme, living in Shelburne (VT), has worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Department of Treasury.  Currently an international consultant specializing in natural resource management, she will be starting a new radio program on CSI Animal Forensics in the fall.  This educational program is free and open to the public, but we are requesting seat reservations. Please call the library (496-3913) or Gail Hietzker (583-1935) for reservations.  Light refreshments will be served.

The Warren Public Library (WPL) and Joslin Memorial Library (Waitsfield) are joining together for our VT Humanities Council sponsored Winter-2010 Book Reading/Discussion Series about Samuel de Champlain and our regional history.  When Cultures Meet: First Contact Between Natives and Europeans in “New France” and the Lake Champlain Basin currently have all books available at both libraries.  VT Humanities Council scholars and series participants will meet on the following Thursdays at 9:30AM:

  –  Thurs., Jan. 21 at Joslin: “The Black Robe” by Brian Moore;

  –  Thurs., Feb. 11 at WPL: “New Worlds For All” by Colin Calloway;

  –  Thurs., Mar 11 at Joslin: “White Devil” by Stephen Brumwell: and

The Warren Public Library was awarded a grant from Vermont Reads- 2009, sponsored by The VT Humanities Council, for an intergenerational  community reading/activity project during October-2009.  We will be spotlighting a book, “When the Emperor Was Divine” by Julie Otsuka, that  explores the internment of Japanese Americans in the United States during World War II.  The following book-related activities are planned:

–  Thursday, Oct. 1, Community Potluck Kick-Off Event at the Warren Library-5:30PM-8PM;

–  Fridays, Oct. 9 and Oct. 23, “Book Talk” Radio Show-11AM, WMRW-95.1FM;

–  Tuesday, Oct. 13, Community Panel and Potluck- World War II Discussion at Evergreen Place (Waitsfield)-11:30AM-1PM;

–  Thursday, Oct. 29,  Community Book Discussion at the Warren Library-7PM;

–  Wednesday, Nov. 4, Community Book Discussion at the Moretown Library-7PM; and

–  Haiku Writing Event will be on going in Valley schools during October-2009.

Events are free, but call the Warren Library (496-3913) or Gail Hietzker (583-1935) to make reservations for the Community Potluck Kick-Off on Oct. 1 and the Panel Discussion at Evergreen Place on Oct. 13.  Potluck participants are asked to bring a dish to pass (side dish, salad or dessert)  that serves about 8 to 10 people.  Our collaborating partners in this project are: The Joslin Memorial Library (Waitsfield), The Moretown Public Library, The Mad River Valley Rotary Club and The Mad River Valley Senior Citizens, Inc.

Warren Public Library Official Grand Opening

The Warren Public Library invites community members, patrons and friends to attend our official Grand Opening in the Warren Town Hall on Friday, August 21 from 10AM-6PM.  A dedication ceremony with light refreshments will take place at 11AM.  For additional information call the Warren Library at 496-3913.
